INDUSTRIAL PLANT ENGINEERING AND LASER SCANNING

By Alessandro Negrini | September 07, 2023

Laser scanning technologies have a consolidated history and a remarkable application evolution, but the last decade in particular has been accompanied by an optimization of hardware and processes that offered a new impetus to a sector traditionally focused on topographic and architectural scope.

  Industrial Na-Tech Risk Management

INDUSTRIAL NA-TECH RISK MANAGEMENT

By Alessandro Negrini | July 12, 2023

In modern industrial context, Na-Tech (Natural and Technological) risks represent a relevant concern, but are rarely handled with foresight. Short-term financial needs, combined with the difficulty in anticipating the exact extent of the threats to come, lead to widespread procrastination that prevents structural interventions to ensure business continuity in extreme conditions.

  Working Safety in Condominiumn

WORKING SAFETY IN CONDOMINIUM

By Alessandro Negrini | May 19, 2023

Fifteen years after the TU 81/08 issuance on safety, there are still many working areas that do not benefit – in whole or even in part – from full practical recognition with regard to the protection of the health and well-being of workers. Condominiums are long remained in this grey area although statistics report over 6'500 serious accidents a year, for a total of almost 1.4 million buildings at immediate risk.

  The Art of Intrusion

THE ART OF INTRUSION

By Alessandro Negrini | May 11, 2023

To date, it still makes sense outlining a clear boundary between the different meanings we give to the word "safety", or it would be more appropriate to recognize that the impact of the digital transition makes such a separation increasingly indistinct and that the same resources are exposed – once again time – to multiple threats, not least those posed by a mix of social engineering and cybercrime?

To deepen this theme, today I recommend the two volumes "The art of hacking" and "The art of deception", both by the programmer (and ex-hacker) Kevin Mitnick (Feltrinelli, 2003-2006), works by now mature from a purely technical point of view of modern cybercrime, but undoubtedly valuable as regards the logic that must guide, upstream, the process of criticalities analysis and proactive management of security in the IIoT 4.0 environment.

This is to remind us that the much coveted "interconnection requirement" is still a two-way street and anyone who does not check in at the door risks finding themselves unwelcome guests in their own home.

  The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

THE ETHICS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

By Alessandro Negrini | March 15, 2023

Today I recommend you "The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence" written by the philosopher and essayist Luciano Floridi (Raffaello Cortina Editore, 2022), a rigorous and (in my opinion) indispensable work to begin to understanding the many aspects that characterize the world of artificial intelligence starting from the basic distinction between imitative and cognitive systems.

Through a clear and methodical approach, the author goes into the merits of the developments, opportunities and challenges related to a technology that, to date, has reached a critical passage such as to impose ethical and social choices for the future.

In short, an greatly interesting reference and, above all, a valid alternative to the today's "parlor chatter" about AI and machine learning.

ICT AND INDUSTRIAL PLANT ENGINEERING: AN ESSENTIAL COMBINATION

By Alessandro Negrini | March 08, 2023

Digital transition also plays a driving role regarding plant engineering, especially in Oil & Gas sector: nevertheless, it is interesting to point out the limits and bias characterizing, to date, ICT applied to integrated engineering.

  Antifragile

ANTIFRAGILE

By Alessandro Negrini | February 06, 2023

Today I recommend you "Antifragile" by the philosopher and mathematician Nassim Nicholas Taleb (Il Saggiatore, 2013), a work that refines and deepens his reasoning that starts in "Fooled by Randomness" and was best developed in "The Black Swan".

It's an essay full of unconventional concepts that push to face in a new way the complex systems modeling criteria, traditional probabilistic tools and risk assessment theories, overcoming the idea of resilience to arrive at the principle of antifragility.

Highlighting common misunderstandings and deceptions that characterize the field of economic-scientific dissemination, Taleb gives us a concrete approach based on heuristics and on direct confrontation with reality, or with its inevitable level of intrinsic disorder.

  Laser Scanning and Integrated Design

LASER SCANNING AND AND INTEGRATED DESIGN

By Alessandro Negrini | January 30, 2023

Although laser scanning technologies have a consolidated history behind them, the last decade has been accompanied by the optimization of activities and processes that have been able to offer a new impetus to a sector traditionally linked to topographic and architectural survey, also affecting integrated engineering with particular regard to revamping and regulatory adaptation of resources otherwise destined for disposal.

  Logistics and Integrated Design

LOGISTICS AND INTEGRATED DESIGN

By Alessandro Negrini | January 04, 2023

Are industrial design and logistics really two distinct areas with irreconcilable goals and priorities? In this article, I delve into the new needs of an engineering market aimed at solving the important contingencies of the last five years, making it necessary to find effective tools to overcome this separation in an increasingly integrated perspective.

VOC EXPOSURE IN THE WORKPLACES

By Alessandro Negrini | November 16, 2022

"As necessary as air": the concept itself is intuitive, but we who belong to the "indoor generation" do we really know the many airborne pollutants we breathe every day? I'm talking about it in this article dedicated to VOCs in the workplaces.

BOVISA CAMPUS, B12 BULDING

Politecnico di Milano. Bovisa Campus. B12 Building. In the early 2000s, we mechanical engineering students called it "Mars Base" as we watched it rise lonely, gleaming (and a little alien) in the midst of what was, then, a landscape of brownfield sites and crumbling old buildings in the extreme outskirts of Milan.
